dirtiest parts of a home

“It’s finally the WEEKEND!”

Though said with the same energy and happiness, this phrase often means different things to different people. For some, this is the time to party like there is no tomorrow. At the same time, a large part of the population waits for the weekend only to start the very satisfying and therapeutic process of cleaning their entire home. If you belong to the latter group, you will love reading this because we are about to spill some secrets about cleaning.

Before we start, let us clarify that we will not tell you to clean your toilet and wipe your floors because you already know. But some other parts of your home are often missed out on or ignored when cleaning. Ironically, these areas are also some of the dirtiest parts of a home.

Kitchen sink

Because we constantly throw water down the kitchen sink, we often feel that it is always rinsed and clean. However, food particles in combination with a moist environment equal the best breeding ground for bacteria. Washing the sink with soap and water should be a regular affair. A daily scrub of the sink at the end of the day is mandatory.

Switches & handles

High-touch surfaces are way filthier than you realise. Think about it, after a day of being outdoors, when you enter your home; your hands are probably dirty from pollution, dust, and more. The first thing you touch is the handle or the light switch. Additionally, these are surfaces that everyone in your home and guests touch frequently. From light switches to refrigerator handles, you need to wipe them with a dampened microfiber cloth and a disinfectant.

Areas surrounding the toilet bowl

Of course, we all make it a point to clean the toilet bowl at least once every week. But what about the areas surrounding it? When you flush the toilet, particles from the toilet shoot into the air (yes, it’s disgusting). Spray the walls with a disinfectant solution, let it sit, and wipe it off.

TV Remote/Laptop keyboard

A high-touch surface again. It is said that your TV remote harbours 20 times more bacteria than your toilet seat. Can you imagine! Even your computer keyword is very dirty for various reasons like eating and working, sharing the space, and how easily dirt accumulates between the grooves. Use a disinfectant wipe or cloth and soap to wipe these things carefully.

Showerhead

Many things, like minerals, can build up inside a showerhead and affect the water pressure. Once the opening gets blocked, the shower head becomes ideal for bacteria and mould growth. To clean the showerhead:

  1. Fill a plastic bag partially with distilled vinegar.
  2. Immerse the shower head into this solution and tie the bag around it so it can soak.
  3. Check what material the shower head is made of to see if vinegar might affect it.

After you wash it for a few hours or overnight, run hot water through the shower. Wipe with a microfiber cloth, and you are done!
